What To Expect On Your First Visit
On your first visit, you will be asked to complete a medical history form and a consent to treat form. We request that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment, to complete these forms. You can pick up the forms ahead of time, during clinic hours and complete before your scheduled appointment, to save time on your scheduled appointment day.
What Happens Next?
The doctor will review your medical history form, discuss what you would like to work on, feel your pulses and look at your tongue. She will then discuss with you a treatment plan based on all the information gathered.
What Is A Treatment Plan?
A treatment plan will tell you how often you should get acupuncture (for example one treatment three times a week) and how many treatments you should receive before re-evaluating your condition (it usually takes 4 to 8 treatments). You will usually know in 6 treatments if the acupuncture is helping you.
What To Expect From Your First Acupuncture Treatment
You will receive an acupuncture treatment on the first visit. The treatment will focus on the main area of concern with usually additional treatment points for your general health. You will remain dressed, but can roll up your sleeves and pant legs, for better access to treatment areas. The doctor will insert sterile hair-thin disposable needles in your hands, arms, legs and feet; sometimes also on your face and chest. These "distal" points can treat problems like back pain and internal disorders.
Most people find acupuncture painless. You may feel a slight pinch when the needle is inserted. You may also feel warmth or tingling sensation in the area of the needle and/or traveling sensation along the channel. Usually once the needles are inserted, you will hardly feel any sensations. Most patients find they feel very relaxed while the needles are in, and some fall asleep. Let the doctor know if you need the needles removed at a certain time, if you need to watch your schedule. You can relax with the needles as long as you like- generally 20 minutes to 1 hour.
What is Community-Style Acupuncture?
There will be other people getting treated at the same time, in the same room, in the same way. This is called community-style acupuncture. We love community-style acupuncture because it makes it easy for people to get treatments whenever they want, to be treated with their families and friends, to feel comfortable rather than isolated, and to create together a collective energetic field that makes the individual treatments more powerful and clinically effective. For your convenience and that of others, we ask that you please be mindful of the calmness of the clinic space and speak softly when necessary. Please turn off your cell phone before you enter. If you need to talk to the doctor about your condition in more detail or have additional questions, please leave a note for her to call you after clinic hours. Generally, the doctor will return your call in 24-48 hours. If you have an urgent medical concern, contact your primary care provider or urgent care.
What to Do In Future Visits
In future visits, please check–in at the front welcome desk. We have made the check-in, payment, scheduling of your next appointment process and treatment pretty easy by providing you with five easy steps:
1. Sign your name in the Daily Patient Log.
2. Schedule your next appointment in the Appointment book on the date and time you prefer, write it down on a clinic business card.
3. Place your payment in the envelope provided with your name on it, but do not seal the envelope so we can reuse it each visit.
4. Place your payment in the Payment Box on the wall by the front door.
5. Choose your favorite recliner, make yourself comfortable so the doctor can begin your treatment.
